Why the Heck is Everyone Putting Birds on It?

Ever stumbled upon a Put a Bird on It meme and wondered, "What the heck is that all about?" Well, grab a coffee, 'cause we're diving into the whimsical world of birds, knitting, and why this meme is just too darn cute to ignore.

So, What's the Deal with the Bird?

Let's rewind to 2012, when Portlandia, an IFC comedy series, aired an episode called "Put a Bird on It." In it, a character named Nina (played by the hilarious Kyle MacLachlan, of all people) runs a craft store where she encourages customers to, you guessed it, put a bird on it - whatever "it" may be.

Now, why birds? Well, it's all about the quirkiness, baby! Birds are cute, they're colorful, and they've got that certain je ne sais quoi that makes them the perfect little mascot for all things crafty and quirky.

Knitting, Crafting, and the Art of Being Quirky

You see, Nina's character is a bit of a hipster stereotype, and putting a bird on something is her way of making it... well, more. It's a commentary on the artisanal, crafty trend that's been sweeping the nation (and the globe) for years. It's about taking something ordinary and making it extraordinary, one little bird at a time.

And let's not forget the knitting! In the episode, Nina's store is filled with hand-knitted bird-themed items. Knitting, with its slow, methodical process, is the perfect complement to this meme. It's all about taking time to create something beautiful, one stitch at a time.

From TV to the Interwebs: A Meme is Born

So, how did this quirky little phrase make its way from a Portlandia episode to your Twitter feed? Well, folks on the internet just loved the idea of putting a bird on it. They started sharing images of everyday objects with birds photoshopped onto them, and thus, a meme was born.

But why did it catch on so much? Maybe it's because we all need a little whimsy in our lives. Maybe it's because it's just so darn easy to relate to. After all, who hasn't looked at something and thought, "You know what this needs? A bird."

Birds on Things: A World of Possibilities

Once the meme took off, people started getting really creative. We're talking birds on pizza, birds on cars, birds on... well, you get the picture. There's even a website dedicated to all things bird-related, where you can find bird-themed crafts, art, and more.

And the best part? You don't have to be a crafting genius to join in the fun. All you need is a picture of a bird and something to put it on. It's like the world's easiest game of Simon Says: "Put a bird on it!"

Birds, Memes, and the Power of Whimsy

So, there you have it. The next time you see a "Put a Bird on It" meme, you'll know it's all about embracing the quirky, the crafty, and the just plain fun. It's about taking a moment to appreciate the whimsy in life, one little bird at a time.

And who knows? Maybe you'll even find yourself putting a bird on something... I won't judge. After all, it's not every day you get to be a part of internet history. Now, go forth and birdify, my friends!
