So, there I was, standing in the crowd at this year's Glastonbury, mud up to my knees, when suddenly, the first notes of "She's a Star" rang out. The crowd erupted, and I found myself thinking, "How did James become one of those bands that just doesn't fade away?"
You know, the kind of band that's been around for ages, gone through lineup changes, musical trends, and yet, they're still here, sounding as fresh as ever. I mean, they've been around since the 80s, for crying out loud!
Meet the Lads
Let's start with the original lineup, shall we? There was Tim Booth, the lead singer with the dance moves that could give Michael Flatley a run for his money. Then there was Jim Glennie on bass, the steady heartbeat of the band. And let's not forget Gavin Rimmer on guitar, who could make a guitar wail like no other. Sadly, Gavin left in the 90s, but the band carried on, stronger than ever.

Now, I know what you're thinking, "But what about the rest of them?" Well, hold your horses, mate. We've got Andy Diagram on trumpet and percussion, joining in the 90s and bringing a whole new sound to the band. And then there's Mark Hunter on keyboards, who's been with them since the late 90s. And let's not forget Dave Bayley on drums, who joined in the 2000s. Quite the lineup, isn't it?
From Indie to Arena Rock
Now, I've seen James play in tiny indie venues, where you could practically reach out and touch Tim Booth. And I've seen them play to massive crowds at festivals, where they've had the whole place singing along to "Laid". It's quite the transformation, isn't it?
But you know what? No matter where they're playing, they always put on a show. Tim's dancing, the music's pumping, and the crowd's loving it. It's like they've got this energy, this je ne sais quoi, that just makes you want to dance and sing along.

More Than Just a Band
But James isn't just about the music, is it? I mean, they've always been political, always had something to say. Remember "She's a Star", with its lyrics about domestic violence? Or "Sometimes" with its anti-war message? They're not afraid to tackle the big issues, and I think that's part of why they've lasted so long.
And they're not just about the big issues either. They're about community, about bringing people together. I mean, they've got this thing called "The Gathering", where they invite fans to come and watch them rehearse, have a drink, and just... chat. I mean, how many bands do you know that do that?
So, Why James?
You know, I've been thinking about it, and I reckon it's because James is more than just a band. They're a community, a family. They've been through ups and downs, lineup changes, musical trends, and they're still here. They've still got something to say, and we're still listening.
And I think that's why, when I was standing there in the mud at Glastonbury, singing my heart out to "She's a Star", I felt like I was part of something bigger. Something that's been going on for decades, and will probably keep going for decades more. And that, my friends, is why James is one of those bands that just doesn't fade away.
