I Opened My Mouth And My Mother Came Out

So, there I was, minding my own business, when suddenly, I opened my mouth and out popped Mom.

I mean, I knew I sounded like her sometimes, but this was next level. I was having a conversation with my friend, and I swear, I could hear the echo of my mother's voice in my own. It was like a weird, real-life version of that scene from The Exorcist, but with more "have you done your laundry?" and less green vomit.

Let's Rewind, Shall We?

It all started when I was trying to explain to my friend why I couldn't make it to her birthday party. Now, I'm not one to miss a good time, but I had a valid reason - my mom's famous apple pie was on the line. You see, it was the annual family baking competition, and I was this close to finally dethroning my Aunt Martha.

So, I started explaining, "You know, it's not just about the pie, it's about family." And then, bam, out came the words, "And you know what they say, 'An apple a day keeps the doctor away,' but have you tried my apple pie? It's divine."

I stopped, blinked, and looked at my friend. She was staring at me, her eyes wide, and then she started laughing. "Oh my god, that was exactly how your mom talks!" she said, wiping tears from her eyes.

Mom-ifest Destiny

I mean, I get it. I've heard it a million times. I am my mother's daughter, after all. But it was one thing to know it, and another to hear it. I suddenly felt like I was in one of those cheesy after-school specials, where the kid realizes they're turning into their parents.

I started to wonder, was this a one-off? Or was this a sign of things to come? Would I start wearing mom jeans and carrying a Tupperware full of leftovers everywhere I went? Would I start saying things like, "Because I said so!" and "If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you?"

Mom-entum Gathering

I decided to do a little experiment. I started paying closer attention to my conversations, trying to catch myself before I channeled my inner mom. It was harder than I thought. I mean, who knew there were so many opportunities to say things like, "Well, have you tried turning it off and on again?" or "Maybe you should have thought of that before you did it."

But you know what? It was kind of funny. I started to see the humor in it. I mean, my mom's not wrong, she's just... mom. And maybe, just maybe, I was becoming a little more like her because I was growing up. Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing after all.

Pie-ning It All Together

In the end, I won the apple pie competition. Aunt Martha was dethroned, and my mom was proud. And you know what? I didn't mind sounding like her. In fact, I kind of liked it. It meant I was becoming someone she could be proud of.

So, the next time you catch yourself sounding like your mom, don't worry. It's not a sign of the apocalypse. It's just a sign that you're growing up. And who knows, maybe one day, you'll make an apple pie that's divine.
