I Know Exactly What I Want To Be

So, there I was, six years old, standing in front of the classroom, hands sweating, heart pounding. The teacher asked that dreaded question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

Now, I wasn't one of those kids who had a clear-cut answer like "an astronaut" or "a firefighter". No, I had a grand plan. I wanted to be... a mermaid. Yes, you heard it right. A mermaid. I mean, who wouldn't want to live under the sea, right?

I remember the teacher's reaction. She smiled, but I could see the confusion in her eyes. She probably thought, "This kid is either going to be an oceanographer or a professional daydreamer." Little did she know, I was just getting started with my unique aspirations.

Fast forward to present day

I'm not a mermaid (sadly), but I've found something I'm passionate about. I'm a graphic designer, and I love it. I mean, who would've thought that drawing underwater scenes would lead me to a career in design?

But here's the thing, folks. I've realized that having a clear idea of what you want to be isn't about having all the answers. It's about having a direction. It's about knowing what sets your soul on fire and chasing after it, even if it's not the most conventional path.

So, what's your 'mermaid'?

You might be thinking, "That's all well and good for you, but I don't know what I want to be." Well, let me tell you, that's okay. It's okay to not have it all figured out. It's okay to still be exploring, to still be discovering.

But here's what's not okay: giving up on finding your 'mermaid'. You know, that thing that makes your heart race, that makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning. That thing that, when you're doing it, you feel like you could swim with the fishes (metaphorically, of course).

So, go ahead. Dream big. Dream small. Dream weird. Just keep dreaming. Because one day, you'll look back and realize that your 'mermaid' was there all along, waiting for you to catch up.

And who knows? Maybe one day, we'll all be mermaids. Or at least, we'll be doing something that makes us feel like we are.
