I Didn T Know She Had A Penis

So, there I was, minding my own business at this friend's house party. I'd known her for years, we'd shared countless laughs, and I thought I knew everything about her. Boy, was I wrong. I was in the kitchen, grabbing another slice of pizza, when she walked in. She was wearing this flowy, bohemian dress, her hair was down, and she was laughing about something with her friends. I mean, she looked stunning, as always. But then, she turned slightly, and I saw it. A bulge. In her dress. I did a double-take, blinked a few times, and there it was, still there.

Now, I'm not one to pry, but I was curious. I mean, we'd been friends for ages, and I had no idea she was... you know, packing. I didn't want to stare, but I was a bit taken aback. I guess I'd always assumed she was like me, like most of our friends. But apparently, I'd been wrong. And that's when it hit me. I didn't know she had a penis.

So, Why Was I Surprised?

I mean, in this day and age, you'd think I'd be more open-minded, right? I like to consider myself progressive, someone who's accepting of everyone's uniqueness. But there I was, surprised. I guess it just goes to show that even the most open-minded among us can have blind spots. I mean, I'd never even considered that she might not be cisgender. It's not like she'd ever given me a reason to think she wasn't, you know?

But then again, why should she have? Why should anyone have to announce their gender identity to the world? It's not like it's a requirement for friendship or acceptance. I realized then that my surprise wasn't because she had a penis, but because I hadn't known about it. And that was on me, not her.

What I Learned

I decided then and there that I wasn't going to make a big deal out of it. It wasn't my place to out her or make her feel uncomfortable. Instead, I decided to approach her the next day, when we were alone. I told her I'd seen something at the party, and I wasn't sure if she wanted to talk about it. I wanted her to know that I was there for her, no matter what.

And you know what? She thanked me. She said she'd been worried about how I'd react, and she was glad that I'd approached her in a respectful way. She told me she was non-binary, and that she used she/her pronouns. I apologized for not knowing, for not asking, and she just smiled and said, "It's okay. Now you know."

And that's the thing, isn't it? We all have a lot to learn. About gender, about identity, about each other. And it's okay to not know everything. What's important is that we're open to learning, to listening, to growing. Because at the end of the day, it's not about us. It's about creating a space where everyone feels safe, seen, and respected.

So, yeah. I didn't know she had a penis. But now I do. And you know what? It doesn't change a thing. She's still the same person I've known and loved for years. She's just a bit more of herself, and that's something to celebrate, not to be surprised about.
