First Teams In The Nfl

Hey there, football fan! Grab a seat, let's chat about the first teams in the NFL. You know, the ones that set the stage for the gridiron glory we enjoy today.

First things first, who do you think was the very first NFL team? Come on, take a guess. No, not the Dallas Cowboys, they're just the most valuable, not the first! It was the Apollos of Canton, Ohio, back in 1920. Can you believe it? That's like, a hundred years ago!

Before the NFL

Now, before we dive into the first NFL teams, let's rewind a bit. The NFL wasn't always the big cheese, you know. It started as the American Professional Football Association, or A.P.F.A. for short. Catchy, huh?

So, there we were, 1920, the A.P.F.A. was born. It was a motley crew of teams, some lasting only a season, others sticking around for a few years. But hey, they were the pioneers, paving the way for the NFL we know today.

The First NFL Teams

Alright, back to the first NFL teams. In 1922, the A.P.F.A. became the National Football League, and 18 teams joined the party. Eighteen! That's more than double the number of teams we have now. But remember, this was the Wild West of football, teams were popping up left and right.

Some of these teams were the original teams we know today. The Chicago Bears, for instance, started as the Decatur Staleys. Can you imagine cheering for the Decatur Staleys? No? Just me?

And the Green Bay Packers? They've been around since 1919, making them the oldest team in the NFL. That's like, older than your grandma's grandma. Okay, maybe not that old, but you get the idea.

Other teams, well, they didn't make it. The Cleveland Tigers, anyone? No? Exactly. They lasted one season, 1922, and then they were gone. Poof! Like a fart in the wind.

Surviving the Great Depression

Now, you might be thinking, "Hey, that's a lot of teams. What happened to them all?" Well, my friend, the Great Depression happened. In 1930, the NFL was down to just 8 teams. Eight! That's like a quarter of the original number.

But hey, they were the tough ones. They stuck around, they survived, and they became the foundation of the NFL we know today. So, here's to the survivors, the first teams in the NFL. They might not have been the best, but they sure were the first.

And that, my friend, is your history lesson for the day. Now, who's ready for some football?
